HUNDREDS of people packed out Swanage to attend the town’s annual Armed Forces Weekend event.
Veterans, military and pipe bands paraded through the town on Sunday ahead of a service at St Mary’s Church.
The event, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, is a long-standing favourite at the seaside town.
Organisers said the entire weekend was a success, with a variety of attractions adding to the occasion.
A spokesman said: “Saturday morning saw the liberty of the town presented to the 11 Signals Regiment of the Royal Corps of Signals for their continuing efforts in aiding the town and particularly Swanage Railway.
“Over the years the regiment have become familiar participants in local events, installing new telecoms to aid the railway in its infrastructure.”
The regiment also helps with the poppy collection and the town’s Remembrance Day Parade. Sandpit Field hosted a poppy picnic on Saturday, marking the legion’s milestone birthday.
The cadet standards bearers’ standard competition also proved a big success with the crowds.
The spokesman added: “This year sees the 90th birthday of the poppy appeal.
“The Royal British Legion is the UK’s leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces, and their dependants.
“These funds not only provide for people in the armed forces but can also provide funds in a temporary crisis, such as homelessness, or assist with loans for property repairs and starting up a small business.”
A number of stalls and displays were on Sandpit Field throughout the weekend. One of the most popular was the disaster field kitchen and their cooking displays.
