NEARLY a tenner. £9.20 a minute to be precise. That’s how much interest will be earnt on the £161,653,000 Euromillions lottery win from Tuesday’s draw.

One lucky British blue ticket holder has scooped the top prize in the draw after it rolled over last week.

With that sum of money you can buy cars, yachts, homes, holiday homes, private jets, footballers, even a small football club. In fact, the winner can really have it all.

But let’s just take a step back to reality for a moment. The chances are you didn’t win this time or the time before, so you haven’t managed to magic the numbers up and got your hands on the jackpot winnings. In fact there’s a 1 in 116.5million chance that your ticket will come up, but it has indeed still got to be someone.

Unfortunately, until your luck does show on the big time with the lottery, you may be stuck with some measly winnings from matching say, two numbers on the draw, resulting in just £8.70.

That was the case for the syndicate here in the Daily Echo newsroom on Tuesday. We predicted riches amongst our wildest dreams to split between us. Instead, we ended up with £8.70.

In today’s era of austerity, what can you get for that money? How can you go about frittering your winnings?

With £8.70 you could… € Get the car washed.

€ Borrow a book or DVD from your local library and then forget about it for a month before you remember and pay the charges.

€ Grab a bunch of flowers for someone who deserves them.

€ Buy a football so you can pretend you’re a Premier League footballer.

€ Order two cups of coffee and two small pieces of cake.

€ Use it for three more chances on the next Euromillions (and once on the Lotto draw for extra luck).

€ Harrods offers a novelty keyring of their famous shopping bag for just £6.95 so you can daydream away your dismay at not winning.

€ Read three weeks’ worth of the Daily Echo and an extra one for the next week ahead.

€ Last of all how about buying some money? Of the chocolate variety. From Selfridges for the princely sum of £7.90, you could get two nets of chocolate gold coins so that you and your significant other could revisit your childhood and celebrate the simple things in life.

Remember when money didn’t matter so much?

It might bring you some small comfort.

And if all this doesn’t appeal to you there’s something you can do for free. It won’t cost you a single penny. Daydream away what you would do if you DID win the lottery.

In that case, if and when your numbers do get called out, you will already know how to spend it.
