CAMPAIGNERS have hit out at plans to axe the front desk at a New Forest police station serving 25,000 people.

They warned that the closure, coupled with other cuts in policing in the New Milton area, could lead to an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour.

The front counter at the town’s police station is due to shut on February 1.

Critics include Councillor Goff Beck, a leading member of the town council and formerly the district council’s Cabinet member for crime and disorder.

He said: “This is a town of 25,000 people and yet we’re seeing less and less of our police, which could result in more petty crime and anti-social behaviour.

“The front desk is a link between the community and the police. People want to know they can speak to someone face-to-face at a given point.’’ Inspector Steve Jackson said: “We understand that people may be concerned but it’s important to recognise that we are not leaving.

“We are never complacent in wanting to maintain an active presence.

“Our officers have access to smart phones and laptops that mean they can do more work while out in the community instead of having to spend extended periods of time in the office.

“There are a range of other contact methods available for those people who may have previously visited New Milton police station.

“The 101 number can be used for anything that is not an emergency, from reporting a crime to contacting a police officer and scheduling a visit.

“People can also visit our force website, e-mail us, access our Facebook and Twitter pages, or visit Lymington police station.”
