A SET of Bournemouth public toilets closed due to drug abuse look set to be moved to the travel interchange.

The automatic toilets on Poole Hill in The Triangle had become a ‘no-go area’ and the unit is now redundant.

The news came during the January meeting of the council’s environment and transport scrutiny panel.

Cllr Mike Greene said: “The primary reason for the closure of the Poole Hill toilet, apart from the lack of use, was the amount of anti-social behaviour.

“It became a bit of a no go area for people who wanted to use toilets – because of the drug abuse.”

Cllr Dennis Gritt said there was a real need for public toilets by taxi drivers and the elderly.

“I think to close Poole Hill is a backwards step,” he said, later adding: “If you were worried about drug abuse you would close every toilet in Bournemouth and probably every phone box.”

The council voted in 2010 to close six toilets permanently and another four during part of the year to save £100,000.
