PEOPLE in Ferndown are being urged to help keep a popular annual fundraising event alive.
The Relay for Life, at Ferndown Leisure Centre, raised £33,000 for Cancer Research UK’s vital work last year.
But the committee has halved in size and fundraisers will have to cancel the 24-hour festival unless motivated volunteers come forward.
A committee chairman and at least three others are needed. Chris Babb, Cancer Research UK’s South West senior area volunteer manager, says fundraising experience isn’t a must.
“We would love to hear from anyone who wants to find out more about Relay For Life and how they can get involved,” Chris said.
“Don’t worry if you haven’t fundraised before. This is a unique event and every single person in Ferndown can play a part.”
The Relay sees teams of eight to 15 people walk around the track, off Cherry Grove, in turns. There’s plenty of stalls and fun activities laid on, encouraging non-participants to take part in the fun.
As Relay For Life is non-stop through the night, those team members not on the track take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their tents.
A poignant Candle of Hope ceremony is held at dusk. Specially-made Candle of Hope bags dedicated to lost loved ones are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the track.
Chris Babb said: “It’s a great way to feel part of the community while raising money for a vital cause at the same time.
“Most of us know someone whose life has been touched by cancer.”
