An inquest has today heard that Bournemouth schoolboy Kyle Rees was struck on the side of the head by an indoor cricket practice ball.
The hearing was opened and adjourned at Bournemouth Coroners Court by Sheriff Payne.
Kyle, 16, a Portchester School pupil, died at 1pm at Southampton General Hospital on Tuesday.
Coroners Officer Alan Young said Kyle was hit by the ball at around 2pm on Monday.
His body was identified at 11.50pm yesterday by his father John Rees.
A post mortem was carried out by Dr Russell Delaney, a Home Office forensic pathologist.
The cause of death was a head injury, pending the results of a laboratory investigation.
The hearing was told Dorset Police are carrying out further investigations on behalf of her majesty's coroner.
A full hearing will be held at a later date.
