COMPUTER hackers may be behind the collapse of the RNLI’s website at the weekend.
The site, which fills a vital role in raising money for the volunteer organisation, crashed on Saturday with users reporting intermittent services throughout the weekend. An RNLI spokesman has since revealed a number of possible scenarios are being probed by the charity’s IT experts, including hacking. However, the charity insists its supporters’ confidential details were never in any danger.
On Monday RNLI spokesman Isla Reynolds told the Daily Echo: “The website is back up and running now so people can donate in confidence. At this stage we are not sure why it went down as we’ve been concentrating on getting it back up.
“It could have been hackers, but this is just one of a wide range of possibilities. There was never any chance of anyone using the site having their details compromised as these are kept on a different server.”
