THOUSANDS of runners are expected to pack out Poole Park this May for the 31st Festival of Running.

The event, a firm favourite on the town’s sporting calendar, has raised tens of thousands of pounds for local charities over the past three decades.

This year, Poole Hospital’s maternity unit is set to benefit.

Speaking at the event launch yesterday in Poole Park, Poole Hospital charity spokesman Kim Hawkings said: “This is the third year we’ve been a beneficiary.

“In the past we’ve bought monitors for the delivery suite but this year our focus is on buying specialist equipment for our Haven Birthing Suite.”

Among this specialised equipment will be a purpose-built birthing pool.

Kim said: “What we would love is for a lot more children to take part this year – we’d love to have more schools, more sports clubs and more community groups involved.

“After all, this is a really great community event and the more people getting involved, the better.”

Last year around 2,000 runners took part, including over 300 children.

The Daily Echo understands a number of local celebrities have been approached to officially open the event, which takes place on May 27.

“We’ve had the Olympic runner Liz Yelling opening the festival in the past,” said Kim.

“But we are waiting for confirmation to see who will start proceedings this year.”

A number of races take place, including the coveted 10km race – that has attracted serious international competitors in the past – and the 5km Born to Run race.

Earlier in the day, under–eights can run a half–mile race, with a one mile distance, for eight and nine-year-olds, and a one-and-a-half miler for those aged 10 to 11.
