BOURNEMOUTH students will be playing a limited role in tomorrow’s national walkout organised by the National Union of Students.
Nationally tens of thousands of students are taking part in the Come Clean campaign.
There is a week of action designed to show that “high tuition fees, hidden course costs and a lack of bursaries” are pricing students out of education.
However Toby Horner, president the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU), said despite wide consultation it received only two requests to stage a walkout.
SUBU instead held a question and answer session with the vice-chancellor yesterday to discuss the same issues.
“This is far more appropriate considering student feedback,” Mr Horner told the Echo.
The students’ union of the Arts University College at Bournemouth is picketing one entrance from 9am to 5pm.
President David Pedrick told the Echo: “We had a dilemma because the date is good on a national scale but for us it’s awful, because a lot of students are due to hand in work.
“Even the students who perhaps wanted to get involved couldn’t.
So we are not condoning any action other than picketing that one entrance.”
