BOURNEMOUTH’S biggest primary school will get an extra 30 children if controversial proposals are agreed by Cabinet members next week.
Hill View has been earmarked for an extra form of entry in 2013 as education chiefs struggle to find places for increasing numbers of young children in the borough, the extra children will be taught in the library.
Councillors are being urged to approve plans to allow 120 children in reception despite overwhelming objections during a period of consultation.
Proposals to increase numbers at Stourfield Infants in Southbourne also attracted objections but the school will also be told to take an extra class next year, bringing reception numbers to 150.
A total of 11 classes will be added next year at schools including Elmrise, Kingsleigh, Queens Park, Winton, St Katharine’s, St Walburga’s, Muscliff and a new primary academy on the site of their former Townsend school.
Some will be taking extra students for the third year running, including Elmrise, Kingsleigh and Muscliff.
Most have not objected because they will receive some form of new build. But Hill View, Stourfield, Elmrise and Queens Park will be expected to accommodate the extra children in existing buildings.
Neil Goddard, service director for children’s strategic services at Bournemouth council, said an extra £3.75 million was secured from the government to fund extra places this year and that the council will be applying for more cash for next year.
Cllr Nicola Greene, cabinet member for education and children’s services, pictured, said: “We have a legal duty to ensure that we have enough school places for children and that is why we have been working hard to find ways of accommodating more children where we can.
