AFTER an illegal camp was set up at Kings Park in Boscombe about a decade ago, temporary barriers were erected to prevent it happening again.

And surely they looked better than the peculiar gates now being proposed for the park entrance?

There is nothing wrong with designers being adventurous. Many people used to sneer at the Sea Music sculpture on Poole Quay but now it’s well-used as a viewpoint and a landmark.

But there is surely something ironic in AFC Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell saying that the idea of the proposed Kings Park gates was to make the entrance “a little bit more domesticated and not so industrial.”

Domesticated? The gates look more like a random display of industrial scrap metal with the Olympic rings and a diamond plonked on them.

The idea of the diamond on the wacky steel gates would be to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Wonder what Her Majesty would think?
