AN East Dorset community worker had the chance to fire the noon gun at the Museum of Naval Firepower after winning a VIP visit to the Gosport attraction.

Phyllis Slyfield-Ford, 80, and her son Lawrence from Ferndown were chauffeur driven to the Hampshire museum.

After a guided tour of the popular venue and lunch at a local restaurant, Phyllis was given the honour of firing the noon gun.

The visit stirred many memories for the pensioner who worked on First Sea Lord Cunningham’s secretarial team during the Second World War.

Over the years Phyllis, who serves on the East Dorset Citizen Panel, has helped many needy causes, including counselling those with spinal injuries.

The unforgettable day out came after Phyllis won a free prize draw as part of the Gowrings Mobility Roadshow.

She said: “It was a wonderful day; the best part was firing the gun. I could do with one on my gates at home.”
