BOURNEMOUTH council has failed in its bid to be named council of the year, but is taking comfort from the fact it was shortlisted in two categories.
The council lost out to Southend-on-Sea in the top category but was highly commended in the children’s services category, won by Cornwall.
Council leader Cllr John Beesley said: “To be shortlisted for council of the year is a great success in itself.
“I am proud and delighted Bournemouth was highlighted nationally for its huge achievements and seen to be delivering on so many levels, despite the recession, at a time when many other authorities are cutting back.
“Much of what lays behind our success has been the result of bold and groundbreaking initiatives – seeking out and forging new partnerships – so it is very pleasing to see others recognise our ambition and determination.”
Deputy leader Cllr Nicola Greene said she was “absolutely thrilled” that Bournemouth’s service for disabled children was highly commended.
