IAIN Weaver will help the Olympic torch on its way to London, but admitted it would be a “huge blow” if his own Games journey was halted before the capital.
Ferndown boxer Weaver will carry the torch through Poole on Friday, July 13 as the symbolic flame makes it 70-day trip across the country.
The 22-year-old is bidding to be Team GB’s representative in the lightweight 60kg class at the Games and could find out if his dream is alive later this week.
GB boxing chief Rob McCracken is set to announce his squad for the final Games qualifier in Turkey, with Weaver hoping to get the nod over Londoner Martin Ward for the April tournament.
Weaver boosted his hopes of selection with a silver medal at the Strandja Cup in Bulgaria last month, while Ward has failed to medal in his past two tournaments.
Weaver told the Echo: “It’s a great honour to carry the torch and it will certainly be something to remember for the rest of my life.
“If I don’t end up going to the Games, it will be a little hard to carry the torch but it’s something I am proud to have been selected for and it will be even better if I can carry it knowing I am going to London.
“I have done all I can. I have medalled in every tournament they have sent me to and I truly believe I deserve to get the nod for Turkey, but if I don’t get in, I suppose it just wasn’t meant to be.
“For the last four years, I have been going to tournaments and winning medals, so it would be a huge blow if I don’t go to Turkey.”
