A SIX-year-old girl probably doesn’t have much use for a book of stamps.
But someone at Royal Mail decided that was the way to recompense Madison Burgess, who had £10 in birthday money go missing in the post.
Her mum Helen tells the Daily Echo today: “I’m not sure what she’s supposed to do with them.”
Earlier this month, we revealed that Royal Mail received 3,770 complaints of items going missing in the post in 2010-11. We had been inundated with calls and letters after telling the story of another child whose £50 birthday went missing.
The Royal Mail repeats in today’s paper that cash should not be sent through the post and valuable items should be spent special delivery.
But surely, a customer buying an ordinary stamp should be entitled to expect that their post isn’t opened before it reaches its destination. Otherwise Madison’s book of first class starts to look even more useless.
