AN INSPIRATIONAL mum of two, who has vowed to fight an incurable cancer which affects her ability to walk, is to be a special guest at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Poole.

Dee Bayliss will join organisers on stage for the second year running to update her story as a beacon of hope for others.

The 48-year-old has continually bounced back despite many knocks since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Sadly Dee’s cancer has spread and she has undergone numerous operations.

This has included some major surgery to insert metal rods into her legs to strengthen her shattered bones, as well as ongoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

But despite difficulty walking, Dee is determined to complete the 5k Race for Life at Poole Park on Sunday, June 24.

She said: “At the moment I can’t walk very far but on the day I intend walking as far as possible.

“I might even break into a trot to go over the finish line!

“I’m looking forward to taking part. I’m a fighter and so grateful for all the care and treatment I have received.

“If I had this type of cancer 15 years ago, I probably wouldn’t be here now.

“My cancer cannot be cured.

“All of my care and treatment is palliative, but research is finding ways of keeping cancer patients with incurable cancers alive for longer so they can spend precious time with family and friends.

“Events like Race for Life are vital and if I can persuade more women to take part I will feel like I’ve done something worthwhile.”

Two years ago, Dee was forced her to give up her post as a teaching assistant for children with special needs at Canford Heath First School.

She lives in Poole with her husband Chris and their children James, 24, and Sarah 22.

Rachel White, the event manager, said: “We are so grateful to Dee for supporting Race for Life.

“It’s all of us versus cancer and I am sure Dee’s amazing spirit will inspire many women to join the fight.”
