A MUM-OF-TWO said it was “disgusting” she was not contacted about her faulty breast implants, despite surgeons being issued with a warning.

Rowena Mackintosh, from West Moors, had an operation in 2009 and is now taking legal action after being told she must pay to have the implants taken out.

But she was appalled by news that there was a 20-month delay between an alert issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and affected women being contacted.

The Commons Health Committee found there was no awareness campaign made to trace patients and has criticised the government’s response to the news that the CE mark for PIP implants had been withdrawn after concerns raised in France about links to cancer.

Rowena, 30, had her surgery to boost her confidence after the birth of her youngest daughter Nicole more than two years ago.

She said: “I think this is disgusting really. They were only doing that so they didn’t have to replace them. To find out that they knew and said nothing about it is awful.

“I started having problems at the end of 2009. I had pains in my breasts but I just thought they were settling in.

“For them not to tell me – that’s disgusting.”

Rowena is now in contact with a solicitor to try to resolve the situation and get her implants replaced.

She said: “I’ve been in contact with the hospital group that did mine and they are not willing to do anything for me unless I pay and it’s going to be a substantial amount.

“The NHS will not give me a scan to see if they’ve ruptured – they won’t even entertain it.

“I just need to wait and find out what’s going on with the solicitor. I’m putting it to one side and waiting to see what’s happening.

“Hopefully I will be able to get them replaced but I’ve got no idea how long it’s going to take.”
