CONCERNS over trade in Bransgore have been sparked following the expansion of a convenience store.

Residents and traders are worried the new extension of the Co-operative store at Oaktree parade in Ringwood Road will be detrimental to fellow traders.

They are citing a pledge from the store when it opened in 2007, saying they would not sell certain items including newspapers and other things, which might threaten neighbouring businesses.

Steve Dinley, chairman of the Bransgore and District Residents Association said the level of concern became apparent following an open meeting of the organisation recently.

He said: “The BDRA generally welcomes the expansion of this store and considers it will be of great benefit to many residents, especially those who are reliant on the now inadequate bus service. “The main concern of the BDRA is the survival of the local businesses that have served us well for many years and the way that the Co-op have backtracked on their decisions regarding the sale of newspapers and other items.

A spokesperson for The Co-operative Food said: “We are investing in our store in Bransgore to support the high street and offer an enhanced service to local people, and in doing so we are bringing it in line with similar sized stores that we operate.

“This means introducing an increased range of dairy, produce and fresh meat, as well as an in-store bakery and a small news and magazine stand.

“Our new store will simply give shoppers in a hurry the opportunity to pick up a range of products at once if they wish.”
