A COUPLE arrested over the death of a six-year-old girl who was staying at a New Forest campsite have been released after police decided the tragedy was not suspicious.
Police said a man and a woman arrested earlier on Good Friday on suspicion of murder had been released with no further action.
They said the results of a post mortem examination conducted at Southampton General Hospital had indicated that there were no suspicious circumstances.
A statement added: "The arrests made this morning were necessary as a result of a report from experienced medical professionals.
"The girl’s death is no longer being treated as suspicious but a tragic incident. An investigation into the cause of the girl’s death is ongoing.
"As with all investigations into the death of a child we will now be working with partner agencies to support the family throughout the investigation process.
"Officers will remain on the camp site and in the vicinity for the next 24 hours to reassure visitors to the site and the local community.
"We would like to thank the campsite and its residents for their co-operation and assistance with our enquiries."
The Camping and Caravanning Club's director general Robert Louden said in a statement: "We were saddened to hear the tragic news earlier today and have since been assisting the police with their ongoing investigations.
"On behalf of the club I would personally like to thank our holiday site managers, assistants and campers on site at Holmsley for their full cooperation and compassion, and our thoughts are very much with the little girl's family and friends at this difficult time."
Police were called to the site atBransgore at 12.50am on Good Friday.
Paramedics were first on the scene having been called at 12.11am, following reports of a young girl who was fitting and not breathing.
A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said the little girl was ''fitting and not breathing'' when medics arrived.
''A double-manned ambulance was sent with an emergency care practitioner,'' he said. ''The child went into cardiac arrest and adrenalin was administered.''
The girl was pronounced dead at Southampton General Hospital shortly afterwards.
A police helicopter circled overhead on Friday morning as detectives continued to investigate the tragedy and examine the scene.
The huge campsite, based on one of the old World War II airfields in the New Forest, was completely cordoned off and closed to all new arrivals.
A police van was parked at the entrance to the site and an officer was taking the names and addresses of anyone leaving for the day.
Three police cars were parked in a nearby lay-by and two officers could be seen outside the camp's Forest Store shop.
Police said on Friday morning that a 30-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, both from Gosport, had been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Families said they had been woken by the screams of a woman at around 12.30am.
The site hopes to reopen on Sunday for new arrivals. To confirm a booking call the contact centre on 0845 1308224.
