TOXIC fumes from a barbecue could have killed a six-year-old girl who died on a family camping holiday, police have revealed.

Six-year-old Isabelle Harris and her parents, Tracey and Lee Harris from Gosport, had a barbecue at Holmsley campsite on Thursday afternoon, just hours before the youngster started fitting in her tent.

A post mortem on Friday failed to reveal an exact cause of death.

Officers are now awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which would reveal if she died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

It is understood ambulance crews found the parents frantically trying to resuscitate their daughter at the campsite near Bransgore after midnight on Good Friday.

Paramedics took her to Southampton General Hospital but she suffered a cardiac arrest on the way.

She was declared dead shortly afterwards.

Her parents, Lee Harris, 30, and Tracey Harris, 40, were initially arrested on suspicion of murder but released without charge the same day.

Police said they were treating the death as a "tragic incident".

A police source said: "The post mortem did not reveal an exact cause of death so we are now waiting for the results of toxicology tests.

"The results may take a few weeks but they would show if the girl suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning, which is one line of enquiry.

"We know the family had a barbecue on Thursday afternoon before the girl died and people have died after breathing in the fumes before.

"We do not know how close to the tent the barbecue was."

A fold-away barbecue and two collapsible chairs could be seen by the entrance to the tent on Friday, as forensic teams carried out their investigation.
