THE mum of a boy airlifted to hospital after a head-on crash has spoken of her relief that he wasn’t more seriously hurt.
Shanna Gibson has been at the bedside of son, Robbie, since the collision on Sunday.
Robbie, a pupil at Upton Junior School, was taken by police helicopter from the scene on the A31 near the Roundhouse roundabout.
He suffered abdominal injuries and bleeding and is now being treated in intensive care at Dorset County Hospital.
The youngster was travelling with his grandparents, Eileen and Robert Murphy of Winterborne Kingston and two other relatives when the accident happened.
Mrs Murphy, 56, was taken Poole Hospital where she underwent an operation.
She suffered neck and abdominal injuries.
Mrs Gibson, 32, of Kestrel Close, Upton, told the Daily Echo: “It has all been such a shock.
“We weren’t with them and I got a phone call from my aunt who was also in the car and said there had been an accident. She said it wasn’t good. I was frantic and I could hear my mum screaming in the background.”
Mrs Gibson said it was difficult for her to get to the crash site and she went with husband William to Dorchester to be with their son.
“I must say the ambulance crews were fantastic,” she added.
Mrs Gibson’s father was driving his Mitsubishi pick-up, while the other vehicle involved was a Vauxhall Zafira.
“I am so glad they were in the truck,” she said. “Otherwise it doesn’t bear thinking about.
“Robbie is doing okay. He is conscious and comfortable though he was pretty much out of it when I got to the hospital soon after the accident.
“He is a resilient little boy and he was very excited about being airlifted. He didn’t think his school friends would believe it.”
She added: “I haven’t been able to see my mum yet because of being with Robbie. It has been a very traumatic experience for all the family.”
Police investigations are continuing. Traffic officers are appealing for witnesses.
