She was born on the day the Titanic went down and is the last survivor of seven children.

Winifred Sawtell celebrated her 100th birthday at the Fairlawn care home in St Mary’s Road, Ferndown with a family party.

Her daughter Pam Pitfield, 66, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren got together to wish her a happy birthday.

“She knew something was going on but she didn’t know what,” said Pam.

“I kept it a secret from her.

“They all met up in the lounge and I pushed her down in her wheelchair.

“She threw her hands up and burst into tears. She was a bit overwhelmed. That was the first time we have had a whole family get together for years and years.”

Her family ranges in age from her daughter Pam to five-week-old great-great-grandson Jayden Pitfield.

And great-granddaughter Sammy Jo, 22, made a birthday cake for the occasion.

Born at Sixpenny Handley, Winifred went into domestic service as a young girl for the family of a doctor in Bournemouth, where she met her husband to be William (Bill) Sawtell.

Bill served in the Royal Navy and then worked as a foreman builder.

They lived in Wimborne and were married for 49 years until his death 26 years ago.

Among her 25 cards from family and friends was one from the Queen and Pam took one of the many bunches of flowers to put on Bill’s grave.

The Care South home did them proud with the chef going in on his day off to prepare food for the party.

“It was really lovely,” said Pam.
