A COUNCILLOR is calling for fire safety checks at every residence in the resort following a spate of property blazes.

Dorset Fire Authority member Phil Stanley-Watts is also appealing for public-spirited volunteers to help make more homes fire-proof.

He said: “There have been several property fires in Bournemouth in recent months and that really concerns me.

“In some cases the fire alarms have been faulty.

“The elderly are particularly at risk and it is important that their homes are safety checked.

“We need volunteers to carry out safety checks.

“It’s a free service which can save lives.

“There is no payment involved but training will be given.”

Cllr Stanley-Watts is planning to raise the issue at Tuesday’s Fire Authority meeting in Weymouth.

Fire Authority vice-chairman, Bournemouth councillor Barry Goldbart said: “We carry out a huge number of home checks every year; in the region of 10,000.

“We don’t have enough fire officers to carry out more home visits so it would be helpful if volunteers could come forward.

“Unfortunately having a smoke detector doesn’t necessary mean that it will save a vulnerable occupant, like a drug addict or alcoholic.”

In 2011 Dorset Fire and Rescue Service attended 439 accidental dwelling fires or fires in the home.
