ORGANISERS of a Christchurch event honouring members of the armed forces are appealing for more sponsors to help out with funding.
The Burton Armed Forces day, organised by Burton Parish Council, is due to take place on Sunday June 10 this year.
The event, which is especially poignant this year following the death of Royal Marine Luke Taylor from Burton, has been renamed the Burton Armed Forces Jubilee Day in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee.
Despite contributions from local businesses including Selex in Christchurch, Bournemouth-based developers Quantum and water company Sembcorp, parish councillors are appealing for further help in funding the event.
“People have been generous so far but anything else anyone can give would be wonderful”, said Judy Jamieson, chairman of Burton Parish Council.
“It takes a lot to put on an event like this and we need some sponsors for the band and also the staging.
“We are also planning something in tribute to the two Royal Marines of the village.”
As well as the traditional parade through the village, it has been confirmed that the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, Valerie Pitt-Rivers will also be attending.
Mrs Jamieson added: “We class this as a high honour.
“We will also have the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals for the first time ever in Burton.”
It is hoped more than 1,000 people will line the streets and congregate on the village green for the event, with entertainment in the afternoon from Frank Sinatra tribute act, Anthony Adams.
This year will be the fifth event to be held in Burton.
Refreshments and entertainment will take place after the parade and service.
Last week hundreds of mourners paid their final respects to Sergeant Luke Taylor at Christchurch Priory.
