GREEN Island is one of five main islands within the English Nature designated Site of Special Scientific Interest area of Poole Harbour.

It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Special Protection Area and along with Brownsea and Furzey Islands is one of the last remaining refuges for red squirrels.

The wooded island, which is approximately 45 acres at low tide – the central raised part being 19 acres – has long been of interest to archaeologists with digs taking place in the 1920s and 1950s.

In 2003 a Time Team investigation for Channel 4 with Bournemouth University found evidence of Late Iron Age habitation.

In 1968 it was bought by renowned Poole Pottery trained potter Guy Sydenham, who in 1987 formed the Green Island Pottery “Greensleeves”.

He sold the island for £500,000 that same year to Jo Davies and it became a base for holidays for disabled children run by the Green Island Holiday Trust.

In 2005 the island was put on the market at an asking price of £2.5m and was bought by Edward Iliffe.
