DOUBLE Olympian Liz Yelling’s dream of a third games is over.
However, the Parkstone-based runner made absolutely sure she enjoyed the finish of what is probably her last competitive London Marathon.
Liz was one of a number of Brits bidding to land the final women’s Team GB 2012 slot.
She needed a personal best to beat rivals Claire Hallissey, Louise Damen and Susan Partridge.
But at the halfway mark she realised the time wasn’t there and stepped off the gas.
She eventually finished 26th in the women’s elite race with a respectable time of 2.40.08.
Liz said: “There is always disappointment when you don’t hit your target. I feel gutted.
“But at the same time we live in a beautiful part of the world, we have a beautiful daughter and now begins a new chapter in our lives.”
Husband and running coach Martin Yelling – who finished in 3.11.31 – said: “When she got half way and realised the time wasn’t on the cards, she decided she wasn’t going to hurt herself.
“This is probably her final marathon. It was a good run but not good enough but, as you can see, she finished with a smile on her face.
“There are more important things going on in the world, so we should always finish with smiles on our faces.”
