A PROLIFIC distraction burglar who preyed on elderly Poole residents is behind bars for six years.
Mark Anthony Rhodes, 28, admitted stealing items from addresses in Richmond Road, Parkstone and Birds Hill Road on Thursday, February 16.
Detectives have thanked media, including the Daily Echo, who publicised the offences that “sickened” shocked residents at the time.
Knocking on doors, he convinced victims that his car had broken down and on the pretext of using the phone book, was allowed to enter homes by compassionate residents.
But it was a ruse, and once left alone in a home in Richmond Road, he stole money from a handbag.
Later that same morning he told a similar story at a property in Birds Hill Road.
“I didn’t know about this but he got what he deserved,” said a Parkstone woman, who did not want to be identified.
Rhodes was arrested last month in conjunction with a variety of burglary offences throughout the country.
When he appeared before Southampton Crown Court he pleaded guilty to two counts of dwelling burglary and one count of fraud, for which he was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.
DC Charlie Soutine said: “Earlier this year, the investigation team issued a witness appeal, accompanied by an e-fit image.
“I would like to thank our local media for their coverage of this appeal and also the witnesses who called in with valuable information about Mark Rhodes.
“Rhodes took advantage of vulnerable members of the community and I hope that this sentence sends a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated.
“I would also like to remind members of the public to be vigilant, keep a lookout for vulnerable family, friends and neighbours, and to report any suspicious activity to the police.”
A resident at the time said: “I think most people are particularly sickened by this sort of crime. The guy must be a real coward.”
