THE sky’s the limit at a Wimborne school celebrating its centenary.
Children from Wimborne First School marked 100 years by launching colourful balloons into the air after a service in the Minster led by the Bishop of Salisbury.
Youngsters from the school council helped the Right Reverend Nicholas Holtam lead the worship, reading prayers and sharing what they had learned about the school’s history.
Headteacher Sarah Lynch said: “We’ve been celebrating 100 years for the last year at school and this was the grand finale.
“It was a lovely service and the school council were absolutely fantastic, sharing what they had learned about the school 100 years ago and now.
“Unfortunately the weather was a bit wet but we got the balloons up and released 100 into the air to commemorate the centenary and look to the future.”
Each of the 236 pupils made a gold rosette to wear to the church, which was filled with parents and invited guests. VIPs included Mayor Robin Cook, Town Crier Chris Brown and Chair of East Dorset District Council Derek Burt. Everyone was invited back to the school, in School Lane, for a buffet and the children shared a picnic in their classrooms.
The school has already held Edwardian dressing up days and a Titanic event as part of the year long centenary celebrations.
Future projects include a stone carving and building a centenary pond.
