THE all-night closure of Poole’s Twin Sails Bridge has resolved some of the problems but further night-time repairs may be required.

The £21.6million bridge has suffered a range of niggling problems since it was completed and opened to traffic on April 4.

With the bridge closed from 8pm overnight on Wednesday, the aim was for Borough of Poole to work with contractor Hochtief (UK) Ltd and electrical contractor IES to understand and resolve them.

John Rice, engineering and maintenance manager at the Borough of Poole said: “We are satisfied with the progress being made to address the teething issues that have arisen since the Twin Sails Bridge opened to traffic. Minor adjustments to the control system were tested during the night and proved to be working successfully. Some outstanding issues with the hydraulic systems were also resolved.”

One of the problems was that a traffic barrier on the Poole side fell apart and other issues described as “minor teething problems” caused a couple of mid-morning bridge lifts to be missed. However no new problems were discovered during the overnight closure.

“The causes of the remaining teething issues, including problems with the traffic barriers, have been identified and the contractor and their suppliers are working closely to resolve these issues,” said Mr Rice.

“This work may require some additional night-time closures but we are confident it will cause minimal disruption to local people.”

The unique bridge made headlines before its official opening when the road surface on the lifting leaves cracked and crumbled and had to be replaced.
