IFORD playing fields and Iford meadows are to be designated “QEII Fields” and afforded permanent protection for future generations.
The open spaces are to get extra protection under a Fields in Trust scheme to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The charity is spearheading a QEII Field Challenge to safeguard open outdoor spaces in the UK and has asked every council in the country to identify a recreational space they would like to see protected.
On Wednesday, Bournemouth’s cabinet agreed to propose Iford playing fields and Iford meadows as suitable candidates for the scheme. Subject to approval, they will keep their names but will officially be designated as QEII Fields and will be marked by an official commemorative plaque.
Cllr Rod Cooper, cabinet member for tourism, leisure and culture, said: “Designating Iford’s playing fields as part of this national high-profile scheme will be really positive for the borough, both to mark the 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee as well as leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
“The designation of these sites under the Trust would also allow us and the local community to access vital additional funding to allow us to further enhance the facilities available at the playing fields in the future.”
The Fields in Trust campaign is seeking to create a network of 2,012 permanently protected playing fields in the UK.
