A DORSET woman who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of 21 is urging women to join her in Poole Race for Life this summer.

Jo Cobb knows first hand how important early detection and research into cancer is after surviving soft tissue sarcoma – a type of cancer which can cause pressure on body tissues or nearby organs.

Now 31 and mum to three-year-old Joseph, she is keen to share her cancer experience to encourage others to help in the fight against the disease.

As a member of Bournemouth Athletics Club, Jo was always a keen runner and lived a healthy life.

But when a lump on her leg began to irritate her, she decided to get it checked out.

Jo was referred to Poole hospital where an ultra sound scan highlighted a fatty lump thought to be nothing to be concerned about.

But Jo, who loves in Lytchett Matravers with husband Kevin, decided to go ahead with an operation to have the lump removed and doctors later broke the devastating news she had cancer.

Jo was referred to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London for an operation to remove further tissue around the site in late 2002 and three months later underwent radiotherapy treatment.

Jo said: “At the age of 21 you just don’t expect to hear the words ‘you have cancer.’ “It is only now I feel ready to share my story in order to help others understand the importance of early diagnosis and the amazing work of the scientists and doctors and nurses who support you along your cancer journey.”

Jo, who has already notched up six Race for Life events over the years, will be taking part this year with her sister Vicky Clinch, 36.
