THERE’S something about Twitter that encourages politicians to commit gaffes.

David Cameron himself had to apologise, in 2009, for letting out some over-colourful words when describing people who are too free with their opinions on the social networking site.

But the remarks made by Moordown councillor Sue Anderson about the right-wing English Defence League (EDL) raise more problems than the average political Twitter row.

A Conservative councillor saying that only the EDL “sticks up for the English” should not be surprised that her own party would want a word.

And to be seen to voice sympathy for the EDL – a hard-line organisation that the Prime Minister has described as “sick” – shows a serious lapse in judgement.

Cllr Anderson says her remarks were made in anger late at night.

She would not be not the first person to tweet in haste and repent at leisure.
