IF your children don’t know more about the internet than you do, then you probably don’t have children.

The sheer pace of technological change makes it hard for adults to devise ways of keeping unpleasant or pornographic material away from young people.

Not so long ago, parents were simply advised to make sure the household computer was kept in a family room for everyone to see.

Now, with smart phones, laptops and tablet computers, that advice is no longer enough. No one knows for sure how the availability of pornography is affecting young people, but the anecdotal evidence is troubling.

Local experts, including the manager of Bournemouth’s admirable Streetwise centre, have welcomed plans to make broadband providers help keep unsuitable material out of children’s reach. But even if this plan is feasible, no-one should imagine that it will be the end of the problem.
