SCHOOLCHILDREN showed they had heads for art at the culmination of a Wimborne project.

A group of artists worked with children from nursery age up to sixth-formers as part of the project held to tie in with Dorset Art Weeks, which saw them make 158 papier-mâché heads in all.

The finished articles included animals, a sunflower, a teapot, fruit, Aladdin and Tin Tin, and they were put on display at St John’s First School for people to enjoy before they go on show around the town.

The youngsters, from St James Cottage Nursery, St John’s First School, Allenbourn Middle School and QE School, were given themes of ‘Kings and Queens’ to mark the Diamond Jubilee, as well as making heads of famous people under an ‘icons’ theme. It links in with Wimborne’s shops, which will display them.

Sarah Ross-Thompson, one of the artists, said: “We wanted to do something community-based for Wimborne.

“We’ve been trying to do something that involved shopkeepers, children and artists.

“It’s been absolutely phenomenal. Initially people said shopkeepers wouldn’t want to display them but they’ve really got on board and got into it.

“The children, teachers and artists have had a brilliant time.”
