IT’S a tough mission for any minister.

But one Christchurch reverend faces a triple challenge as he is determined to build the size of three church congregations across the borough.

Reverend Mark Meatcher, the minister of the Christchurch Group of the United Reformed Church, which includes Burton, High Cross and Walkford, said he and other members of the churches are working tirelessly to attract new worshippers.

At High Cross, there has been a special effort to attract new families with the focus on bringing youngsters into the church.

As well as a Dads’ Club on Saturday mornings, High Cross also has a Little Stars parent and baby group as well as a youth club, Soul Juice, and drama group of local youngsters and schoolchildren.

Reverend Meatcher said: “One of the things we want to do is reach out to the people that are out there and assure them that church can be more than just a baptism or wedding or even a funeral.

“Many people are scared to cross the threshold unless it is for something like this and we want to say that doesn’t have to be the case.

“We’re trying to grow all the churches at the moment but Burton is growing the most.

“At High Cross it is a more gradual process – we’ve started a lunch club and there is Cafe Plus as well which meets weekly”, Reverend Meatcher added.

“One of the things we have worked on is trying to be a more welcoming church.

“Anyone new who comes through that door we try and make feel comfortable.

“We want people to ask questions and talk to us.

“So many people haven’t got someone to listen to them. That’s what we can provide – a friendly ear.”

He added: “In a few years time I would like to see the church full.

“I would also like to see this building open every day, as a community centre for people to just drop in and have a coffee.

“There isn’t really a hub in Somerford where people can meet. I want High Cross to be that place.”
