A NEW Forest organisation has issued a warning to campers about the dangers of barbecues just weeks after a youngster lost her life.
Six-year-old Isabelle Harris died at Holmsley campsite in the New Forest on Good Friday.
Police investigating her death were looking into the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning from a barbecue.
The warning from the Safer New Forest Partnership urges people to only use barbecues outdoors and never take them into an enclosed space, such as a tent or caravan.
Even when turned off, barbecues can give off colourless, odourless, tasteless and invisible carbon monoxide fumes, which can be deadly – campers are reminded to ensure their barbecue is fully extinguished and is well away from any sleeping accommodation.
New Forest Group fire station manager Mick Thompson said: “To prevent an increased risk of fire, barbecues should be used with care and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
“In rural areas, they should always be off the ground and never left unattended. Approved fuel and firelighters should only ever be used, never petrol or paraffin.”
