TWO councils in Dorset are set to spend around £1,000 each on tickets to Olympic events.
The Borough of Poole has bought 20 volleyball tickets in London and 20 football tickets in Cardiff for £1,000.
Six will be given away free to youth workers.
Under 19-year-olds will soon be able to apply for the other 34. Winners will have to pay the council for the tickets and contribute towards travel costs.
Dorset County Council applied to buy 30 tickets for the ticketed area of the Nothe, Weymouth.
The council’s civic and ceremonial fund would pay for the £35 tickets, totalling £1,050. If approved, Chairman John Wilson will host a small civic event with the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland.
A spokesman said: “We have yet to find out how many tickets we will be receiving and which dates they will cover. Once this is confirmed, we will be able to plan who specifically will be offered tickets.
“We feel that when an international event is held in Dorset, it is appropriate for the chairman of the county council to extend some hospitality to celebrate the event with others.”
This will include representatives from the voluntary sector and ‘looked after children’.
Bournemouth Council has not bought any tickets.
