CAMPAIGNING Christchurch dog owners are trying to halt controversial orders designed to exclude and restrict dogs at popular walking spots throughout the borough.

Christchurch Borough Council’s consultation on dog control orders has caused much consternation among dog owners unhappy with the potential new rules.

Measures among the package include excluding dogs between April 1 and September 30 between the car park at Avon Beach and the end of the beach huts at Friars Cliff. Currently the restrictions are in place from May 1 to September 30.

Other orders under review would require dogs to be on leads in areas including Mudeford Wood disabled access path, Steamer Point nature reserve, Druitt Gardens, Convent Walk and Christchurch Priory Gardens.

At a meeting at Stanpit Village Hall on Wednesday, many were concerned at another attack on responsible dog owners.

Mike McCann, who organised the meeting, said: “Seeing the amount of people should send a message to the council.

“We want to make sure this can’t go any further, so need to drum up as much support as possible. We’re not against all the orders, for instance the dog fouling order or dogs on leads by direction, but the others are causing a lot of upset.”

And to demonstrate their strength of opinion to the council, many are planning to present their responses at the Civic Offices on Tuesday at 2.45pm.

Steve Duckett, head of planning and health at Christchurch council, said: “The consultation on the proposed dog control orders is still ongoing and we would be grateful to receive any comments our residents would like to make on the proposals.

“We would also be more than happy to attend any meetings to discuss the proposals and hear any concerns people may have.

“The results of the consultation will go before members of Christchurch council’s community services committee before any decision is reached.”
