PURBECK Art Weeks Festival’s opening ceremony, taking place in Corfe Castle today, has a historic Olympic flavour this year.
Penny Elsom, daughter of the Corfe-born organiser of the 1948 Olympic Torch Relay, Commander Bill Collins, will lead the procession She is set to march ahead of the drummers, flag-bearers and circus acts, as they wind their way through the village marking the start of the 16-day arts event.
Mrs Elsom will carry a replica 1948 London games torch.
This year’s festival – running until June 10 – involves a dozen local schools, numerous exhibitions, arts workshops, food & drink and a host of live music and dance events.
Event spokesman James Fenton said: “Those taking part include BBC 4 presenter Melvyn Bragg, pictured, Radio 3 presenter Lucie Skeaping, the Gabrieli Consort and Players, artist Sheila Girling and the accomplished Sacconi String Quartet.”
