RESIDENTS in Burton opposed to a potential housing development made their feelings known at a meeting in the village.
Villagers told planning consultants they did not want to see 45 new houses built at the rear of Medlar Close and Alder Close.
The proposals for the new development form part of Christchurch Borough Council’s ongoing Core Strategy consultation, which aims to reshape the future of Christchurch over the next 15 years.
Feria Urbanism, who set up the meeting at Burton Primary School, has been hired by landowner Meyrick Estates to consult with residents about the type of development they might want to see.
Around 50 people turned up to the meeting on Thursday, which set residents tasks to find out what they thought about the village, what parts of it they loved and wanted to see improve as well as enquiring about the needs of different groups of residents.
The main points of concern included the loss of a working farm and the location of the houses, as the land often becomes flooded, as well as the increased pressure on local services.
Parish council chairman Judy Jamieson, pictured inset, said: “There are three main issues which caused great concern.
“These were the loss of jobs and loss of the farm, which is an integral part of our village and there was wholesale opposition to the loss of the green belt.
“The important thing is once we have built on the green belt we can never get it back.
“As parish council chairman I urge residents to ensure they have their say against it. Respond to the Core Strategy and say no.”
Richard Eastham, director of Feria Urbanism said: “We were pleased that there were that many residents there.
“The debate was a lot better because of that and I think it went well. It is obvious there is a lot of anxiety and concern and people do not want this development to happen at all.
“The question and answer session and the debate was very intelligent and I think everyone understands that they can influence this.
“People can still object to the core strategy but also take part in this without any conflict.”
The next meeting will take place from 7.30pm on Thursday June 7 at Burton Primary School.
