A POLICE investigation has been launched following an injury to a child at a Poole day nursery.

The Sunshine Nursery at Bournemouth and Poole College’s North Road campus has been closed down for six weeks by government inspection body Ofsted while inquiries are carried out.

A spokesman for Dorset Police told the Daily Echo: “Following a leg injury to a child at the Sunshine Nursery at North Road in Poole on Tuesday, May 22, the nursery was closed by Ofsted for six weeks.

“Partner agencies including Ofsted are investigating the incident. No further information is available at this time.”

On Monday the nursery was locked up and deserted. An Ofsted notice at the entrance states that it has suspended the registration to provide childcare from May 25 to July 6 to “allow time to investigate our belief that a child may be exposed to a risk of harm, and for any necessary steps to be taken to eliminate or reduced the risk of harm”.

Ofsted will regularly review the situation and will alter its position if it believes that children are no longer at risk.

The nursery, which caters for up to 36 youngsters at a time, runs from a mobile classroom unit on the college campus from 8am until 6pm, Monday to Friday. It is mainly used by college students.

An Ofsted inspection carried out in 2009 rated the nursery as satisfactory.

A spokesman for Ofsted told the Daily Echo: “We are working with the local authority and police to support their investigation.

“The setting is not currently operating as we have suspended the registration while this investigation is taking place.”

And a spokesman for Bournemouth and Poole College added: “There is an ongoing police investigation involving a single incident at the nursery.

“The college is co-operating fully with the investigation.”
