The new parts have been ordered for Poole’s Twin Sails Bridge and should take around three weeks to arrive.

When the control valves for the malfunctioning traffic barriers come in, Borough of Poole anticipates it will take a further week to fix.

The £21.6m bridge has experienced a number of problems with the road barriers and control system since its delayed opening to traffic on April 4.

Jim Bright, strategic director Borough of Poole said: “The contractor and their key suppliers have acknowledged the issues that have arisen since the opening of the Twin Sails Bridge and will be undertaking the necessary remedial work as soon as possible.

“We anticipate that the majority of the snagging items will be dealt with in the next month or so.”

Residents have been faced with delays as at times the road barriers have gone down to allow the triangular sails to lift and allow boats through and then failed to re-open.

On Monday last week the second harbour crossing was out of use by road traffic for around three hours and drivers had to head across the old Poole Bridge during the evening peak.

Workers from contractor Hochtief and council staff are frequent seen on the bridge across the Back Water Channel.

On April 17 a traffic barrier on the Poole side fell apart and had to be replaced and an overnight closure was held on April 25 to carry out tests and adjustments.

As a result it was announced that the valves used to raise and lower all four barriers were to be replaced.

The borough says there will be no significant impact on the operation of the bridge during this time. The cost of repairs during the first year’s defect period is the responsibility of the contractor.
