CHRISTCHURCH has always been a strong backer of the monarchy with its pomp and ceremony and the town kept up the tradition yesterday.

Thousands flocked to the quay to soak up the atmosphere of thefree event and there were also street parties dotted around the borough.

Families arrived in their droves to enjoy the live music at the diamond jubilee celebrations, which were organised by the Christchurch British Legion with more than 30 stalls and music and beer tents.

Committee treasurer Terina Nunn said the success showed how much residents wanted to celebrate the jubilee.

She said: “It’s been a terrific atmosphere with lots of music and lots of people enjoying themselves.

“The support from businesses has been incredible and this definitely shows the support from Christchurch and how everyone wants to celebrate what is a unique occasion.”

Tanyth Golding, 25, from Tuckton, visited with friends and her dog Stetson.

She said: “It’s been really fun and amazing and community driven.”

Among the street parties nearby was a get-together on Mudeford Lane. Resident Peter White, 55, is hoping they will follow it up with an Olympics party.

He said: “We all got together and everybody agreed what we would all do and it just came together.

“It’s good fun and it’s all about the neighbours.

“And it’s great now because all the kids know each other and after having a party last year for the royal wedding it’s all very patriotic.”

Residents at Castle Avenue in Highcliffe drank a toast early in case it rained but the weather held out.

And resident Anthea Hammond is hoping the party will help to boost community spirit.

She said: “We might do it again if Prince William and Kate have a baby next year.”
