In recent weeks the issue of gay marriage in England, with regards to the Church of England, has been a very hot topic; dominating headlines and sparking debates all over, causing much offence to LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) groups the Church and other religions.
The government proposal to introduce same sex marriages has caused the most serious controversy in the 500 year history of the Church of England. Opposition comes from the church itself and other religious groups implying that it would cause the church to lose traditional definition and idealistic views of love, marriage and religion, yet is this just?
The bible teaches that “let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.”, Bible, 1 John 4.7-8, 12-13, 18-20 yet the church seems to be defying these biblical words in order to maintain a traditional state of Church.
However I do not feel that this urge to keep church traditional is the best or strongest argument they have, as they cannot say marriage has stayed traditional. We have seen marriage come from men owning their wives without there being love in the equation, yet the marriage of two gay people in love cannot be accepted?
Disallowing homosexual marriages can be seen as homophobic discrimination and a violation of religious freedom, which are unacceptable in the 21st century in my opinion.
Gay marriage is so beneficial to society, please excuse me for being stereotypical, but homosexual couples adopt the children that are often forgotten about and raise them and give them a life that they would have never been able to have. Gay marriage doesn’t hurt society – It doesn’t bother me, so why should it bother the church?
I believe if two people are in love, they should be allowed to marry till death they do part.
Do you?
