BOURNEMOUTH’S Denise Mellor – the fighter labelled the ‘hardest mother on earth’ – will be aiming to power to world glory on home territory tomorrow.
World Boxing Council (WBC) international Muay Thai champion Mellor will battle Thailand’s Nattaya Kantasit for the vacant – 45kg global title.
The pair will lock horns at Bournemouth’s O2 Academy as part of the first event to be staged by new promotion Muay Thai World Series.
Described as the ‘hardest mother on earth’ in the press after fighting around the world since the birth of her second daughter five years ago, Mellor will be aiming to defeat an opponent almost half her age.
Kantasit, though, is an experienced fighter and arrives in the ring at 22 years old to meet 40-year-old Mellor.
But Lorne Castle, Mellor’s trainer, insists his fighter will get straight on the front foot.
“For this fight, we have been working on power,” said Castle.
“With Denise having no issues having to train to make the weight, we have been able to aim every part of training at technique and particularly at generating power. That is power we believe the opponent will have never felt and so could not anticipate.
“Aggression from the start is also our intention. Denise has the fitness to push forward every round so she is not intending to give her opponent any time to figure her out.”
The fighters will weigh in today at the Fitness First gym in Bournemouth (4pm).
There is also a packed undercard on the bill which sees a number of international competitors featuring at the Boscombe venue.
Doors open at 4pm tomorrow and tickets can be bought by visiting www.ticketweb.co.uk or, subject to availability, on the door for between £25 and £30.
