NEW plans to redevelop a disused factory in Poole into an Aldi supermarket have been submitted.
But it said its latest plans had overcome the reasons given by BCP Council’s planning committee when it rejected the scheme.
Aldi had originally hoped to open a supermarket on the site last year and had criticised the council for taking 18 months before its first application was refused.
Siding with council planning officer Steve Llewellyn, councillors backed concerns about the impact the new store would have on its nearby one in Wallisdown Road as well as the previous allocation of the land for a care home.
But with planning permission for the care home now having expired, Aldi has submitted a new set of proposals for a supermarket alongside a new coffee shop.
“The application site is a brownfield site, there are no alternative and sequentially preferable sites that are suitable and available to accommodate the proposal, and a proportionate retail impact assessment has demonstrated that impacts are within acceptable thresholds,” a letter submitted on behalf of the chain says.
“Furthermore, the previous planning permission for a care home scheme on the site has now lapsed, and it has been demonstrated that the care home allocation is unlikely to come forward.
“The proposals are in accordance with the requirements of national and local policy, providing beneficial economic development on a site where replacement employment uses and care related uses are not deliverable.”
Access to the site would be via Redlands with the possibility of access for vehicles from Alder Road having been “quickly ruled out”.
Aldi said the provision of a new supermarket and coffee shop would create 58 jobs.
Council planning officers will consider the plans in the coming weeks.
