TRIBUTES have been paid to well known Christchurch man Tony Livy, who passed away after a short illness aged 77.

Tony owned and ran The Grove Garage for more than half a century, his inspiration and passion for the motor business helping to inspire many young mechanics.

After the sale of the business in 2000, Tony continued with his bottled gas delivery round, working until he passed away.

Tony leaves behind his wife Rosemary, sons Martin, Darren and Andrew, his grandson, who he always referred to as his “little man” Floyd, and daughters-in-law Alexia and Lilliana.

Martin said: “We have been so overwhelmed with the support and kindness we have received from dad’s friends and fellow customers. He really was a much-loved and respected member of the Christchurch community.

“Dad had a passion for the motor trade and local history and would often be known to spend hours winding away the time over a few cups of tea and cake, chatting with his customers and friends.

“On reflecting on his life we underestimated the amount of time he gave up supporting the younger generation in achieving their own goals and setting them up for the start of their working life.

“Dad would often employ youngsters who maybe wouldn’t have been given an opportunity elsewhere. They went on to become successful in their own right.

“Dad always believed in giving everyone that chance.”

Tony’s family have decided that any donations from his recent funeral will help support the charity Teen Wheels, based at Oakmead College of Technology, which helps Dorset teenagers develop their motor mechanic skills.

Martin said: “We are really proud to help this charity and see it as a fitting tribute to our dad.”

Donations can be sent to Miller Bros and FP Butler Ltd, Funeral Directors, 119 Bargates, Christchurch, BH23 1QH.
