There’s nothing quite like a cold refreshing beverage at home, whether that’s a cocktail in the garden with friends or you’re trying out a new TikTok recipe for the creamiest iced coffee.
But to make these drinks the ideal temperature many ice cubes are needed, especially in warm weather.
While you could head to the shops to stock up on pre-made ice cubes, it’s much cheaper and more environmentally friendly to make your own.
Yet sometimes numerous trays of ice cubes stacked in the freezer can often have an odd taste and look cloudy which can be off-putting.

In order to create crystal-clear ice cubes that look like they belong in a luxurious bar to impress your friends and family, there are a few things to consider.
That’s why home water treatment expert Gene Fitzgerald at BOS has issued some advice to those who haven’t been able to master the art of crystal-clear ice cubes at home.
What is the best type of water for crystal-clear ice cubes?
Gene explains: “The main problem with homemade ice cubes is that they often appear cloudy and leave unwanted residue in drinks.
“This is because tap water contains minerals and impurities and our home techniques of freezing also result in trapped air in the ice cubes.

“Not only does this affect the overall look of your ice cubes, and drinks, but it can detract from the taste of your favourite drinks too.”
The expert added: “While boiled water can help to create a higher standard of ice cube, which is clear, it doesn’t remove all impurities and minerals.
“Instead, to create crystal clear ice cubes, you need pure water such as distilled water or water that’s been filtered.”
Can the way you freeze ice cubes affect the way they look and taste?
Gene continued to say: “The way you freeze your ice cubes can also have an effect on the way they look and taste.
“Instead of pouring the water into ice cube trays and putting it into the freezer, you need to freeze the water slowly.
“This ensures that any air and impurities can be pushed out and will result in crystal-clear cubes.”
One way you can do this is to use a method called "directional freezing".
This is when you insulate every side of an ice cube tray apart from the top resulting in the water freezing from the top down.
“Before you serve, simply chip off the clear ice cube and leave the cloudy bottom,” recommends Gene.
“So if you’re getting ready for a summer soiree, and want to impress friends and family with luxury bar quality ice cubes, remember it’s not just about the water type but also how you freeze too.”
