Teaching assistants (TAs) are a role that is very common in classrooms around the UK, and interest in becoming one has increased in the last few years.

In an analysis undertaken by Brother UK, the office electronics supplier, there have been 275,000 searches for TA roles in this period of time.

Due to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announcing a new qualification in the Advanced British Standard, which will see pupils asked to do more subjects, it could see more TA roles created.

What qualifications are needed to become a teaching assistant?

According to the Government website, you can become a teaching assistant through a college course, an apprenticeship, volunteering or applying directly.

You can take a college qualification to get started, such as:

  • Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education
  • T Level in Education and Early Years

The entry requirements you may need include:

  • 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent, for a level 2 course
  • 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, for a level 3 course
  • 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths for a T level

Do you need prior experience to become a teaching assistant?

It is not compulsory to have prior experience before becoming a teaching assistant, but it would most likely help in securing a role.

For example, taking voluntary work at first is one way to get yourself experience.

What is the average pay for a teaching assistant?

According to the Government website, the average salary for an assistant teacher is £14,000 per year for a starter and £21,000 a year for someone who is experienced.
