STEVE Fletcher insists Cherries must go to Premier League Wigan determined to cause a shock.

The Dorset side were paired with Roberto Martinez’s top-flight outfit in yesterday's FA Cup third round draw and will visit the DW Stadium on January 5.

There are 40 league places between Cherries and the Latics, with Martinez’s side aiming to extend their unbroken top-flight status into an eighth year following promotion in 2005.

Fletcher told the Echo: “They are a very good side, but even though they are an established Premier League club, we have to go there believing we can get a positive result.

“We believe we can go there and possibly cause an upset. We have to believe that.

“A lot of factors would have go our way and if Roberto Martinez plays his strongest side, we will be right up against it.

“But he could make one or two changes and, if we are at our best from one to 11, we could come away with a good result.

“There have been bigger shocks in the FA Cup and we won’t be going there to make up the numbers.”

Fletcher, whose last appearance at the DW Stadium was for Cherries in the old second division 11 years ago, added: “It doesn’t seem five minutes since I was playing there for Bournemouth in the league and it’s marvellous what Wigan have achieved since then.

“I scored the equaliser up there in 1999, but we lost 3-1, although I’ve got a picture at home of Jamie Day and Christer Warren giving me a big cuddle after I scored!

“Home and away, I have some good memories of playing Wigan. Obviously, it’s different now they are in the Premier League and they have real quality in their side.

“But we have to strive to achieve what they have and I’m sure that is what the chairman and Maxim Demin want us to do.”
